Research Interest

Silicon photonics, optical microresonators, photonic devices, on-chip optical interconnects, heterogeneous integration, biophotonics.

Biography

Professor Poon received his BA degree from the University of Chicago, Illinois, in 1995, and his MPhil and PhD degrees from Yale University, Connecticut, in 1998 and 2001, all in Physics. He joined HKUST in June 2001. He has been serving as the director of the Nanosystem Fabrication Facility (NFF) since 2016. He also serves as the director of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).

Professor Poon is the Associate Editor of the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. He is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the American Chemical Society (ACS) Photonics. Over the past decade, he has served as the Technical Program Committee Chairs for numerous photonics- and microcavities-related conferences including The 6th International Workshop on Microcavities and Their Applications (WOMA) 2019, Technical Sub-Committee on “Micro and Nanophotonics” of the 13th Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Pacific Rim (CLEO-PR), Hong Kong (2018) and others.

Throughout his career, Professor Poon has 188 publications, including 64 Journal papers, 1 Co-edited book, 3 Book Chapters, 117 Conference papers and 3 invited articles in peer society magazines. He has also supervised 25 graduate students over this period. He has 2 granted patents and another one pending review.
